Now, that's not inherently a problem. You can make a film with basically no plot. But in order to make a good film with no plot, you need to get me invested in the characters--I wasn't. There was just not a lot of coherency to the presentation. I didn't feel like I was getting to know them; I didn't feel like I was connecting with them.
You can also make a film where that's an okay thing--but to do so you need a compelling plot. The plot of the film can be described as an abridged year of high school. In that one sentence you sum up the entire film--all of the relevant details can be tied to that singular sentence. There's not a depth, there's not a real narrative. You go from one scene to the next without much of a reason for these scenes to be correlated. It's choppy and random and it never feels like it actually is getting me into the world.
I don't connect with the film because if I can't connect with the characters (what's there to connect over?) and if I can't connect with the plot (what plot?), then there's not anything to connect with in the film at all. Now, granted. I don't think it's a bad film. In particular I do like the musicals (it's just that I feel like the film actually needed either way more or way less musicals in order to be a success: way more to make it impactful; way less, to spend the wasted time on said musicals on building the things which weren't built), and they have rather excellent choreography.
But it's a thoroughly mediocre film, inducing an "eh" reaction from me. Worth seeing once, but not really something I'd place rewatch value on. After the film, we finished off last week's dessert, which I didn't know we had at first and was pleasantly surprised we did.
It's a good thing we did though, because as I discovered today...we apparently have literally nothing else. No chocolate ice cream whatsoever. Which is odd, because there was a full carton last time I checked. But then again I don't have ice cream that often and I suspect my dad on his own with his frequent sweet tooth did. Eat essentially the whole thing. Without restocking our supply.
This would be a minor inconvenience...if not for the fact that he's gone for a whole week along with my mom. Down to Oregon, to take care of his dad. My grandfather needs a surgery done to prevent paralysis. This is a risky surgery with a high chance of killing him, but the options are "risk of death, with ability to live" or "die a slow death from being completely paralyzed and placed in a nursing home to slowly wither away". (The area does not have good medical care and is somewhat-infamous for how haphazardly it treats people of that age.)
The latter is a fate that both my dad and my grandfather adamantly refuse to let happen, and so, they've gone to great lengths to ensure this surgery would happen. Of course, thanks to stubbornness combined with ignorance and literally the worst hearing ever, this was on short notice. The surgery was scheduled for July 20th or so. This was fine. My grandfather misheard it as August 20th. This would be too long of a wait since he is already risking partial paralysis from not having had the surgery. And so a date which was fine was rescheduled to be on a date not-so-fine: July 3rd.
Ruining our family's plans for the 4th of July. My parents are going down for the surgery itself and also to provide both care and after-care for him, to help him out with his recovery. (He won't immediately be able to live on his own, that's only the hope.) Which is why they're gone for a week.
My brother is also going down tomorrow, though he intends to come back so us four kids will celebrate without our parents around. So that's a thing. A thing which will happen. I'm largely on my own for a week. My mom taught me how to cook poached eggs in the microwave (at least in theory). My dad cooked one last meal for me this morning as well. I...ended up doing the poached eggs because he literally could not have botched the eggs worse.
I have had a small lunch/dinner in the form of leftover spaghetti, but I haven't yet had a proper meal. That'll come once I have the room in my stomach, since breakfast was at like 2 PM and this lunch only an hour ago at 5:25 PM (with that being exactly an hour ago), so I'll have more, I'll just have it...later. Rather than right now, as was the intended plan with ice cream.
Ah well.
There's probably more but this is all I can think of.
